Bodegas Riojanas was formed in 1890 by the merger of two wine producing families – the Artacho family and Rafael Carreras – that already had a hundred years experience of wine production in Rioja. Today the fifth generation of the same family controls more than 300ha of the best vineyards around Cenicero and SanVincente de Sonsierra.

While staying true to its regional wine making traditions, Bodegas Riojanas is also at the forefront of innovation, working with the University of Logrono in perfecting wine production. In 1978 it was the first winery to have its vintage followed and ratified by the Consejo Regulador, following the wines from inception to labelling and making it the only Rioja vintage to have official guarantees prior to 1980.

Its brands of Monte Real, Vina Albina and Puerta Vieja are enjoyed in over 64 countries around the world. In the late 1990s the family started to look outside of its Rioja heartland, and in 1999 Bodegas Torreduero was opened in Toro. Using Rioja techniques, the Toro wines were soon winning awards, and the company now also has wineries in Rias Baixas, Rueda, Ribera, Cava, Monterrei, and Bierzo.
